| SCBWI 47th Annual Summer Conference – Portfolio Showcase – 2018 |
I’ve attended conferences in the past, but this was my first time entering my illustration portfolio in their showcase. For those of you who have never heard of SCBWI, it stands for Society of Children’s Books Writers & Illustrators. SCBWI is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization and the only professional organization specifically for individuals who write and illustrate for children and young adults. Every summer they hold a 4 day conference in Los Angeles.
The first word that comes to mind about the conference is FRIENDLY. I can’t remember the last time I’ve walked around and had every single person return a smile. Or when I sat down and was immediately engaged in conversation. This was especially nice since I knew absolutely no one attending.
Although I’ve illustrated two published books, I was fresh on the scene. Those two books were published a long time ago and since then I’ve been painting for galleries and working as a 2D/3D Digital Artist in the animation industry.
Every key note speaker, workshop and panel discussion offered many nuggets of great information. I have notes scribbled over every handout, in every margin, and throughout my sketchbook. I’ll need a week just to sort through it all.
The portfolio showcase was full of amazing talent! CONGRATULATIONS to the winners of various illustration awards: Gail Buschman, Chad Hunter, Erin Balzer, Zahara Marwan, Sara Gavryck-Ji, and Michelle Mee Nutter.
Ultimately, the BIG take away for me, is to ask myself the difficult questions and find the “heart” of the stories I want to tell. Yes, I’m an illustrator, but realize I am also a storyteller and really enjoy finding creative and meaningful ways to tell a story….whether they are my stories or not. I’m looking forward to exploring the various ways to do that!
